As was expected by virtually everyone, former New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has cleared waivers and is officially a free agent for the first time in his career. He can now sign with any NFL team, if he can find an interested party.
Tebow was waived by the Jets on Monday after suffering through a terrible season in New York. Truthfully, we all suffered through his lone season with Gang Green. Had the former first-round pick been claimed off waivers, the claiming team would have had to pay the rest of his contract, which would have totaled about $1.9 million over the next two seasons.
The Jets acquired Tebow from the Denver Broncos in March of 2012, as a part of the trade agreement, New York still has to pay the Broncos $1.53 million.
Two indoor league football teams have already offered Tebow a job, and there has been speculation as to whether or not any Canadian Football League teams would show interest as well.
Tebow has already stated that he’s unwilling to move to tight end, so he wants to stay at quarterback. Frankly, that’s going to be the reason he has trouble finding a job. No sane general manager is going to waste a roster spot on a “quarterback” with a career completion percentage of 47.9 percent.
In 35 career games, Tebow has completed just 173 of 361 passes for 2,422 yards, with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His career quarterback rating is just 75.3. He has also fumbled seven times, while rushing 197 times for 989 yards (5.0 yards per carry average) and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
I really don’t see any team willing to bring in Tebow as a quarterback. He hasn’t shown he can consistently complete passes.
We may have seen the last of Tebowmania in the NFL.
